Sorry if you're getting this twice--the correct header did not come through the first time.

I can't believe that it's already the middle of August! New items for your share this week are celery and celery root (celeriac). If you haven't tried celeriac before, do! Here's a little information to get your acquaintance with this delicious vegetable started. I like it roasted but as the article lets on, there are many ways to enjoy celery root. Please click here to make your choices for the week.

A quick reminder to please return any boxes, brown cloth bags, pints, and quarts that you have at home. I'll also take back and reuse rubberbands so if you don't have a home use for them, recycle them back to me, please!

I draw my inspiration to do the kind of farming I do from a lot of places. One of them is the quarterly Small Farmer's Journal. They just recently (with the help of Andrew Plotsky of Farmrun) producedthis video of Ryan Foxley, a farmer fiddler in the Pacific Northwest. Soak it in!

Northland goings-on include painting and preparing Donn's "horse-drawn tractor" (ground-driven PTO forecart) for the Draft Animal Power Field Days at the end of September. We'll be loading it up on a trailer and hauling it over to Barton, VT to share with other draft-enthusiasts. It's nearly all painted- bright orange with black accents. Northland CSA members, you may have seen it in the shop next to where you pick up your shares.

We also combined wheat yesterday! Michael Glos of Kingbird Farm brought over his crop which he harvested with a horse drawn mower and we tossed it into Donn's Allis Chalmers All-Crop combine. Michael left with over 150 lbs of wheat to grind to flour for his family and I got a big pile of straw to mulch my fields.

The second flush of peas (snow this time) is coming on, the pumpkins are oranging, and melons are ribbing out. It's feeling like autumn already. Strange.

Hope everyone's enjoying the vegetables. Let me know if there's anything you need!

Oven-Roasted Celeriac, Potatoes, Carrots and Garlic

a couple tablespoons olive oil
sea salt to taste
pepper to taste (i've been experimenting with using a lot more ground cayenne and other locally-growable peppers rather than black pepper which has quite a footprint)
smoked paprika to taste, regular paprika also does well here
some celery root (celeriac)
some potatoes, chunked
some carrots, chunked
some onion, quartered
a whole lot of whole, peeled garlic cloves
Place oven rack in upper-middle position and heat the oven to 425 degrees.
To a large mixing bowl add olive oil, salt, pepper and paprika; mix. Add veggies and toss! Transfer veggies to pan, spread them evenly in a single layer. Roast 35-45 minutes, stirring several times. EAT!
